Our Principal

MDUSD is pleased to announce the appointment of James Stewart as the Principal of Monte Gardens Elementary in Concord.
James brings 16 years of service in public education as an educator in Florida and a teacher and administrator in California, including valuable experience working in International Baccalaureate schools. Guided by expertise in evidence-based instructional practices, he is a leader who has held executive and board roles in local and national professional associations. Above all, James is deeply committed to pairing high-quality instruction with a warm, supportive environment so that every single student feels valued and is empowered to thrive.
James earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Education with a Minor in Philosophy. He earned his Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. James also earned a Graduate Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Teaching from Johns Hopkins University.
James resides in Clayton with his wife and their dog. Outside of his professional endeavors, James and his family can usually be found taking advantage of the beautiful local landscape by spending their weekends hiking together through the East Bay Regional Parks.
